SYDNEY VINCENT NORTH

Son of David Henry North

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Sydney carried on one of the familys traditional occupations and became an architect working from his father`s practice in 1889. He started his own firm in 1899 and had an office at 203 Strand, London. He was admitted to the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1900 and became a fellow in 1907. He specialised in commercial/industrial properties and designed several department stores, including C&A modes throughout the country.

He lived at home until at least 1891 but he was living with his father at 14 Westover Road Wandsworth in 1900. Vincent seems to have left the family home about the same time as his father !

  • By 1901 he was living at 4 Fort Paragon, a boarding house in Margate owned by Daniel Wood. On the 28th of February 1903 Sidney married his daughter Jessie Ellen Wood !  Information at the Institute of British Architects show his offices at 99 Regent Street in 1914.

Sydney was an acccomplished artist in both watercolur and in oils, specialising in landscapes and buildings. He held several exhibitions and at least one painting (The Broken Bridge) was exhibited at the the Royal Academy. In December 2000 an exhibition of 50 of his paintings was put on by Michael and John Benjamin, together with Edward Gorringe (Peggy Norths Godson), nearly all of them being sold.

His great nephew Geoffrey writes: During the Second World War my brother Bob and I were evacuated to Lewes to live with our great uncle
and two of his two daughters, Betty and Peggy. He lived at Ousedale
House which is on the A275 opposite the Chalk Pit pub (right) just where the Germans would have invaded!

One was bought by Geoffrey Albert North (Left: Arequipa at Burlesdon)  It features his impressive yacht. a 69 foot steel ketch,  in which he sailed around Britain and Europe.  It was requisitioned  at the outset of war and not released until 1947.

We do not hold details of the last few years of Sydney`s life yet. If you can help with anecdotes, facts, photos then please contact us
