I am indebted to Harry’s youngest daughter, Barbara married to Eric Robinson, and Robin’s daughter, Elizabeth married to Peter Wormald, who have provided considerable information concerning their own immediate branch of the Norths and that of Charles Niven McIntyre North.
In particular Elizabeth’s husband Peter Wormald has also had a distinguished career. Peter was born in West Hartlepool, the eldest son of a local government solicitor who became Town Clerk of Doncaster to which the family moved when Peter was three. The Yorkshire connection is strong since both his parents came from Leeds. Peter was educated at Doncaster Grammar School and The Queen’s College Oxford where he took a degree in Law.
Abandoning his original intention of becoming a lawyer, he joined the Home Civil Service as a graduate trainee in 1958 and was assigned to the Ministry of Health. Apart from a 2 year secondment to the Treasury, he worked at the Ministry of Housing and its successor departments until 1990, spending about a third of his career on personnel and industrial relations, eventually becoming the national Director of Personnel on the National Health Service Management Board.
In 1990 he was appointed Registrar General for England and Wales and as such Head of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys. He played a leading part in planning the merger between OPCS and the then Central Statistical Office to form the Office for National Statistics. As Registrar General he was in charge of the 1991 Census. He also introduced the move away from Register Offices as the only permitted venues for Civil Marriages. He was appointed CB in 1990.
