NOTES

    CHARLES NORTH

    WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

We believe this is Charles North

Born 21st February 1815, son of Joseph and Elizabeth North (nee Gibson)at Great Windmill Street London (probably 23). Joseph was a turner (cabinet maker) as many Norths were at this point. But according to the 1861 Census he had become a house builder and estate agent.

Their first son was  born 21 May 1837 and baptised 14th June 1837 in the Parish of St George Hanover Square with the names Charles Niven North. It would seem that the son added the name McIntyre at a later date! Early census records which would have been recorded when Charles senior was head of the household state that Charles Niven was born in Westminster in Middlesex.  However when Charles Niven was head of his own household he also declared that he had been born in Scotland !

Charles senior and his wife Elizabeth lived in several places: in 1839 they were living at 16 King Street, Soho, London. King Street has now been pulled down but almost exactly follows the route of Shaftesbury Avenue.   In 1847 they were living at 9 Tavistock Terrace , Upper Holloway (according to the birth certificate of David Henry); in 1849 at 4 Alfred Terrace Upper Holloway (birth certificate of Robert Edwin), in 1857 at 2 Mary’s Terrace High Street Camden Town (Amy’s certificate) and in 1861 at 11 Harley Street Battersea. At the time of the 1871 Census they had moved a few houses along the road to 18 Harley Street Battersea.   According to the 1881 Census he and his family were living at Chaucer Road, Acton. Although  Charles was originally a cabinet maker he became a builder and he may have moved into houses that he had built. His builders yard was in Queeens Head Court, Great Windmill St.

Elizabeth was born between 1815 and 1818, the daughter of John Sanderson Gibson. John served in the Royal Navy and made lieutenant in 1791, commander in 1806. He served on Perseus 1787 , Ferret 1790, Hyena 1792, Supte ? 1793, Pigmy 1794, Viper 1794, Indefatigable 1796, Arab 1796, Amphilitre 1799, Imperouse 1800, Falcon 1805, Atlas 1806, Fury 1807, and Sarpen 1809. in 1806 he served on the first of line  battleship under Sir John Duckworth at the destruction of the French Fleet near St Domingo. His father was John Gibson senior, who commanded the Perseus when his son was aboard in 1787. The father was quite a “Hornblower” type figure, promoted post captain after the the battle of Ceuta against the Spanish, when he had 14 musket balls extracted. He was made superintendant in in 1804 . .

Elizabeth died in 1886 at 21 Spencer Road Acton, just after their golden wedding in 1885. Charles died of a heart attack in 1889 at 18 Churchfield Road, Acton.
