    WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Written by his Grandson Don North 10/2/2009

“He was born  in England, his father was either Scottish or of Scottish ancestry,
(Webmaster: There is doubt about this, currently being researched) his father was a strict disciplinarian (my grandmother told me that her husband's father was handy with the stick). He had some friends  who called him Quintus (he was the fifth  born in the family). He ran away from home at a young age and he spent
several years in the British Merchant Marines. I think he was involved with the Boer War. He eventually found his way to the US. He graduated in 1908 from the YMCA (Young Men's Christian
Association) Training School, which prepared young men to lead YMCA
programs (incidentally this school now is known as Springfied College and specializes in preparing men and women tas instructors and coaches in sports). In his professional life he served in a number of different capacities.  He ran a boys reform school in Massachusetts and oversaw all of the state`s reform schools for boys.  He was a director of a summer camp, and was a leader in the Boy Scouts movement.

He was an excellent speaker, organiser, teacher of boys, fund raiser, leader of young men. He was not a big man, about 5 foot six inches, but a good athelete and a man with a lot of energy.happy, cheerful, god sense of humour, perhaps a bit of a ham. “

An internet search revealed: He served as Narragansett Council's first Scout Executive from 1916 to 1918. North was responsible for Yawgoog being chosen as a permanent campground for the Rhode Island Boy Scouts
